This past week I was invited to attend the graduation of some friends who have been in Goroka attending the university. I agreed to meet them up at the university a little bit early to take a few pictures before going in. I was expecting the traditional cap and gown but that is not quite what I got! In true PNG fashion there was much more bilas (decoration) and it was neat to see how they added their own flavour to the celebration.
They had much to celebrate as they had invested much to come and get further education. After uprooting their three children, many long hours of studying, having to figure out some of this new computer age in order to do assignments, and having to wait on the Lord to provide what they needed to get by, they were successful! They are now able to go out and teach others the importance of gaining medical knowledge so they can go out into the many remote communities around this country to be the first line of help for so many who live in isolated places and have very limited access to health care. Since both Jakob and Waeya are them selves both CHW's (Community Health Care Workers) and Jacob is a Pastor they have the passion to go out and teach in a holistic way, sharing both the healing that comes through the love of Christ as well as concrete health knowledge.
As Pastor Jakob strung up his bow and gathered the arrows he said he was not going out to fight and kill as his family in the past had done, now for him they represented going out to fight with knowledge and truth!
